Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Youth leadership plays a vital role in shaping political participation, particularly in the context of local governance and community engagement. In Sabon Gari LGA, Kaduna State, student leaders, particularly those within academic institutions, often represent a significant segment of the youth population and act as catalysts for political involvement. Historically, Nigerian youth have demonstrated substantial engagement in the political landscape, especially through student unions and other student-led organizations, which serve as platforms for political awareness and activism (Akinyemi & Bello, 2024). Youth leadership within these organizations is crucial for fostering political engagement, as these leaders influence the political behaviors of their peers, encourage active participation in electoral processes, and serve as bridges between the youth and political structures. However, there remains a gap in understanding how youth leadership, specifically student leaders, influences broader political participation in Sabon Gari LGA. This study will examine the role of student leaders in fostering political engagement and their impact on the political participation of the youth in Sabon Gari, focusing on their involvement in campaigns, advocacy, and voter education.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of youth leadership to drive political participation, there is limited research on how student leaders in Sabon Gari LGA influence the political behaviors of their peers. While student leaders have played prominent roles in activism, civic education, and advocacy, their impact on shaping the political participation of youth, particularly in local elections, remains underexplored (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). Additionally, the gap between academic institutions and political structures often limits the full potential of youth leadership in contributing to political processes. This study aims to address this gap by evaluating the influence of student leaders on political participation among the youth in Sabon Gari LGA, Kaduna State.

  1. To examine the role of student leaders in fostering political participation among youth in Sabon Gari LGA.
  2. To assess the influence of student leadership on voter education, advocacy, and political engagement.
  3. To evaluate the challenges and opportunities for increasing youth participation in politics through student leadership in Sabon Gari LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do student leaders influence political participation among youth in Sabon Gari LGA?
  2. What is the role of student leaders in promoting voter education and advocacy in Sabon Gari LGA?
  3. What are the challenges faced by student leaders in encouraging political participation in Sabon Gari LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Student leadership positively influences political participation among youth in Sabon Gari LGA.
  2. Student leaders play a significant role in educating the youth on political issues, enhancing their participation in elections.
  3. There are challenges faced by student leaders in fostering political participation among youth in Sabon Gari LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it explores the critical role of youth leadership in shaping political participation at the local government level. Understanding how student leaders influence political behaviors can help policymakers, educational institutions, and youth organizations harness the potential of student leadership to boost civic engagement. Moreover, the findings of this study will contribute to the discourse on youth empowerment and political development in Nigeria, offering recommendations for strengthening the role of student leaders in political processes.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the impact of student leadership on political participation in Sabon Gari LGA, Kaduna State. It specifically targets student leaders in tertiary institutions and their influence on youth political behaviors. The study will not cover other forms of youth leadership, such as youth political groups or non-student organizations.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
